When the call went out to celebrate Albertina Walker's six decades as a gospel music legend, the response was not only a stirring evening of tributes to a pioneering woman but a precise lesson in gospel's essentials. She was awarded a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album for "Songs of the Church; Live in Memphis.". And the audience provides a significant part of the performance. She was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, one of nine children in a hard-working Baptist family.
